So if you know me, you know that one of my favorite Canadian bands is The Elwins.
Why do I love the Elwins so? Well. The Elwins and I. We got back. Way back. So far back... that I knew the Elwins BEFORE they were The Elwins.
In fact, it goes back to my merry old days working at The Arts Music Store in Newmarket; or Neuveumarche as it were. I started taking guitar lessons there when I was 13 years old, by the time I was 18 I was working the lesson desk where I met said drummer, no ex, boyfriend. Said drummer had a charismatic charmer of a student named Travis. The Ex referred to Trav, or T-Rav, as his protege because frankly Travis is a crazy talented drummer. Travis and I became friends and exchanged the mix CDs of sorts. I think when I met Travis he was 12 or 13 at the time; just like I had been when I started music.
Travis started playing with Matt, who I also got to know, and in more recent years Feurd (the dude with the AMAZING MUSTACHE) joined in. They started off as Honey For The Bears, but took their name from the movie Willow; hence, The Elwins.
I've seen their songwriting grow, I've been to a lot of their live shows, I wrote their band bio, I had them rake my moms leaves, and I skype chat when they are on the road. They are my favorites. Really. They always recommend good music and have a wicked sense of humour.
But enough about my Elwin lovin'. See for yourself. I really do think they are some of the top artists in Canada (along side another Newmarket favorite and friend Will Currie & The Country French). I'm always honoured when they join me at shows; and who knows, maybe there's a collaboration of sorts in the future? Late Elwins? Julelwins? Elwinly?
Follow them on twitter http://twitter.com/theelwins or facebook http://twitter.com/theelwins
So here they are in a recent Southern Souls performance. Prepare to have your mind blown at 1:43 They are that good. I don't hype anyone, but if there's one band I do it's my boys.
They are my friends.
They make good music.
It doesn't get much better than this:
